Politecnica’s adaptive re-use of  Foundry 1 transforms a former industrial building in the ILVA brownfield site of Follonica into a new Fair and Exhibition Centre. But not only that, its central location, between the historic centre and the new Central Park, turns the new "Art Centre" in a new "Urban Gateway" that re-establish a thoroughfare and enhances a neighborhood, which had been marginalised for decades on the edge of the city.

Foundry 1 is an example of 'best practice' because it integrates urban planning, architecture and interior design to return a building long since degraded to the city and its citizens. The goal of the project is best expressed through the words of Violet Le Duc when in 1855 he wrote: “to restore a building is not to repair it, nor to do maintenance or to rebuild it, it is to re-establish it in an ultimate state that never existed before”.

Based on this theory, the intervention is the result of an integrated design that addressed the project at different scales: from the regeneration of its brownfield site, to the design of its new contemporary identity, to its best restoration techniques and the details of its lighting and interior design.

The global sustainability of the project is embedded in the history and unique location of “Foundry 1” at the entrance of an industrial ‘campus’, enclosed within the so-called magonali walls that outline a triangular lot, with the vertex pointing towards the bridge over the Petraia river (in the direction of Massa Marittima) and the base parallel to the sea.

A settlement arose there as an arsenal in the late Renaissance period and, during the course of the nineteenth century, it became the ‘industrial citadel’, housing the steel and cast iron foundry owned by ILVA manufacturer that abandoned the site in 1960. A centuries long history that was  regenerated in 1999 thanks to the integrated PIUSS masterplan that aimed at reversing the marginalization in which the area had been condemned for decades.

Beatrice Gentili, head of architecture, recalls that “before restoration, “Foundry 1” seemed almost like a Romanesque church stripped of its roof, “a clear perspective box” made of strong walls, which were severely degraded and which required a lengthy investigation into the most appropriate methods of restoration”.

Two large doorways, one overlooking Via Roma, the other on the north-western side, welcome visitors leading them into the central nave, turned into a “Covered Square” and redesigned by the new wooden structure that Politecnica calls “Il Grande Mobile” that offers new service and exhibition space. With great respect for the historical ‘box’, three suspended cubes, linked by a mezzanine, form a self-supporting and fully reversible structure: “a box within a box” reshapes the space adding new drama to a place for the contemporary arts.

Consistent with the restoration approach, the volume of the Cubilotti Tower -partially demolished in 1975 but whose shape is evident near the western wall of the building-, has been rebuilt and houses a cafeteria, open to all the facilities of the Park, namely: the Leopolda Theatre, the Museum of Iron and the City Library.

To unequivocally state its being a new addition to the historic core, it was chosen a light plaster, contrasting with the red of the old factory’s walls.

This dialogue between old and new is a central theme of the project that becomes even more evident in the interior that must reconcile the restoration of a heritage building with the design of a new contemporary environment.

Foundry 1 is therefore an integrated project that from being a catalyst of the city regeneration reaches out to address issues of detail, such as the design of the furniture and lighting system that was to keep maximum flexibility for hosting exhibitions but also installations and media events.
