British artist Stuart Haygarth is above all else a storyteller. His practice revolves around commonplace or discarded objects which are diligently collected, meticulously categorized and skillfully assembled into elaborate sculptures that whimsically imbue the banal and overlooked with beauty and grace by turning randomness and waste into order and symmetry. For the artist, no object is unredeemable. In Haygarth’s hands, salvaged prescription spectacles, exploded party poppers, smashed car wing mirrors, ceramic figurines, and laboratory equipment become sculptural marvels of exquisite refinement.

Thousands of cheap trinkets purchased at pound shops find new life as an illuminating flying saucer (UFO, 2009), used glass vials are revived as an Art Deco styled chandelier (Tools of the Trade, 2015), and heaps of plastic debris that Haygarth found washed ashore during a 450-mile coastal walk in the south of England are used to create a suspended sculpture of explosive visual power (Strand, 2012). Pieces like these exemplify Haygarth’s painstaking process and unbound creativity but also underline his ability to construct narratives about time, loss, abandonment and modernity, underpinned by themes of redemption and transformation.

Colour is very important to my work and often through the process of taxonomy colours are isolated. This is another way of creating order and categorising objects by colour or function. The Tide chandelier (2005) is created from a plethora of different coloured plastic objects but the categorisation part of the piece is the fact that the objects are all plastic and collected from the UK coastline.

Stuart Haygarth studied photography and graphic design at art school and my main focus was studio photography. In the studio Stuart Haygarth was interested in creating an atmosphere using studio lighting and how light reacted or transmitted through different materials. It is this knowledge that was later reflected in his current work.

Stuart Haygarth's beach combing started around the year 2000 when he would drive from London to the Kent coast to take my dog Albert for coastal walks. he began to collect interesting objects that I found, and over time I would begin to sort through the objects and create categories. Eventually he built up a large archive of objects and started to make my first pieces, such as Tide Mark, Tide and Lighthouse. It obviously takes a lot of time to find objects of interest and then there is much time spent scraping, cutting and meticulously washing - I beautify the objects before they pass quality control and can be used in a work.

Elevating the commonplace or discarded object is a central tenant of Haygarth’s work. His exquisite designs and installations have employed the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life – from man made debris washed up on the seashore to thousands of salvaged prescription spectacles. Creating order and symmetry out of randomness and waste, his work is as much about the process of collecting and collating materials as the elevation of these materials to objects of value or beauty. By constructing narratives about time, loss, abandonment, and modernity, these human aspects attached to the chosen objects are an integral part and driving force within the work. As he has said, ‘My work revolves around everyday objects, often collected in large quantities, categorized and presented in such a way that they are given new meaning. It is about banal and overlooked objects gaining new significance’.
