In Kazakhstan, security is serious business. Guards are stationed at the entries to government buildings, public forums, businesses, hotels and residences. Even private homes have manned security stations. This focus on security is a tradition that reaches back to the gated caravanserais along this famed “Silk Road Corridor.” The Esentai gatehouse is designed as both a security checkpoint and welcome mat in a new mixed-use complex designed by SOM. Framed by Almaty’s snow covered peaks, this transparent glass pavilion sits within a pool of water like a melting ice block mirroring its surroundings. Upon entry, security guards direct visitors to their destinations while underneath the gatehouse a security control center provides information on Esentai’s inner workings. At night, the pavilion’s colorful glow is a welcoming beacon to the Esentai Park neighborhood.
