Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados submerge themselves once more in the south of Mallorca, to renovate 32 bedrooms on the 4th floor of a pre-existing hotel built by architect José Alcover in 1973. The renovation aimed to update the space while continuing to offer guests a relaxing and high-quality stay.

In the rooms, the team chose to highlight a continuity of paving materials. The flooring, laid on the horizontal plane, is the same material that is used in vertical in the bathroom, for comfort and optimal resistance. The design is based around three colours inspired by the Mediterranean setting: white, blue and green. These create an agreeably fresh atmosphere.

Another design continuity between the rooms are the fabrics used, which are traditional ikat prints based on those that were brought to Mallorca in the 16th century via the Silk Road. These traditional fabrics stand out for the identical pattern on both sides of the cloth, and they manage to be cutting-edge, elegant and high quality all at once. The headboard of the bed is constructed with natural fibres, stamped with a characteristic Mallorcan artesanal pattern.

In the corridors, the design team produced a visual game to enhance the existing architecture. When a guest makes his way down the corridor to his bedroom, he sees tones of white on the perforated wall panels. Leaving his room and retreating down the corridor, these same panels present him with an assortment of colours. The corridor design is “crowned with a pinstriped carpet that emphasizes the length of the hall.”

The aesthetic of the redesigned space is therefore a mixture of styles inspired by the 1970s. The furniture, carefully chosen and designed to respond to these same impulses, helps to achieve harmony in the space and to create a contemporary, fresh and colourful hotel.
