The fourth phase of the Huanglong Vanke Center, as a complement to the completed commercial and office complex of the first phase, extends the overall planning layout by adding two office building cores on the southern plot, augmenting both office space and commercial boundaries within the existing mixed pedestrian and vehicular area. Apart from enhancing the project’s volume, the Phase Two landscape design aims to align with the spatial objectives of the entire Huanglong Center while ensuring consistency in architectural aesthetics between the first and second phases, while also establishing its own distinct spatial characteristics.

This project is situated in the core area of the Huanglong International Business District in Hangzhou’s CBD, adjacent to Zhejiang University. It is approximately 3.5 kilometers away from the Wulin commercial district, offering convenient transportation. Additionally, it’s around 8-10 kilometers from Hangzhou Railway Station and Hangzhou East Railway Station, with a direct distance of roughly 30 kilometers from Xiaoshan Airport.
Huanglong originates from the ancient site of Huanglong Cave at the northern foot of Qixia Ridge in Beishan, by West Lake. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, it has been renowned as one of the five key dragon-worshipping sites on the lake, with the scene ‘Huangshan Jicui’ from the Twenty-Four Views of Qing Dynasty Hangzhou referring to this location. ‘Huanglong Tucui’ is listed as one of the Ten New Scenes of West Lake. The Huanglong area represents the financial heart of Hangzhou city. It densely gathers a multitude of financial investment firms, consulting services, prominent commercial enterprises, and renowned higher education institutions, symbolizing the city’s wealth and glory.

Similar to the development and spatial characteristics of Hangzhou’s Huanglong district, the landscape design aims to create an interactive and leisurely linear space called ‘Pulsation’ along the boundary road between Phases One and Two. This space, positioned alongside the critical thoroughfare, becomes the new east-west axis for subsequent phases. The fresh spatial experience introduces novel content to the entire project, connecting the existing Phase One central square on both sides of the axis, along with the Phase Two constructed office drop-off plaza and a lawn activity square. The project highly respects the original landscape aesthetics on the northern side, responding within the systems of paving and planting, while distinguishing itself in character to harmonize without mirroring it.

The new wave – the pedestrian experiential belt along the central axis – stitches together the north and south areas, initiating the outward expansion of the design, linking and fostering multiple spatial elements. The east-west central axis maintains a pleasant spatial scale, with colorful pedestrian experiential belts featuring curving paths that pulsate and delicate plantings, allowing users the freedom to pause and utilize them. The flat and vertically undulating colorful walkways always lead users to different functional formats in the north-south direction, while also creating options for interaction with the commercial boundaries of the southern plot.

The construction of the paving system responds to the original pavement style. It defines various spatial boundaries using different pavement modules across different spatial scales. The use of colorful paving along the central pedestrian experiential belt introduces variation and contrast

The dry spray water feature is located on the northern side of the office drop-off plaza, positioned at the central area of the site, serving both the office arrivals and the entire commercial and office complex. It stands at the convergence point of the three towers, not only serving as a gathering point for crowds but also acting as a barrier for the drop-off area, creating an entryway to the site. The water feature plaza and the office garden are designed in a connected and progressive layout, serving as visual counterparts to each other. They jointly manage functions such as guiding, diverting, and gathering pedestrian traffic, forming a north-south axis.

The lawn activity plaza is situated in an open area abundant with sunlight. The lawn provides an excellent social and recreational space, while the infrastructure and transportation facilities along the perimeter buildings are discreetly concealed beneath rows of trees.

The plaza incorporates rest areas by installing pergolas and terraces, catering to the needs of people of all ages. The rest zones, segregated by a loop road, face the sunny lawn, creating a reciprocal visual connection. This loop road efficiently guides individuals from different directions toward the towers.

The office garden progresses alongside the central water feature, effectively diverting and guiding the flow of people entering from the southern side of the site. Cascading shrubbery separates the civic interface, forming the boundary of the site. Details like stepped planting beds convey the internal ambiance, working in conjunction with the architectural facade to create a complete site ambiance.
