Rethinking Podgorica: underground innovation choices
In order to get informed about techniques for interior designing of public spaces, semester task for the course of Interior design 2 was related to the reconstruction of the underground passage. The passage is situated under the St. Petar Cetinjski Boulevard that connects Rimski Square with the public property area that leads to the new built temple. Students had the task to suggest interventions for “reanimation“ and reinvention of the urban area in terms of design and functionality. In the selection of potential intervention was not ignored character of the underground space, low level of natural light in the passage and attractive position of the location in the urban structure.
The current condition of the passage, despite of significant investment, has not achieved sufficient quality that was planned for this public space. Low frequency of passers and the few unsuccessful attempts to alive the passage, devaluing this potentially usable urban ambiance.
In that sense it is necessary to invent functional and ambient adjusted solution for reconstruction and revitalization of the underground passage, trough the student’s proposal for their new conceptual design. Students task were to make interior design project for the appropriate additional function, in accordance with defined conditions of interior architecture in passage.
Range of additional functions varied from introducing temporary commercial contents, the division of space on the part for walkway and part for the public purposes (cinema, space for presentations and exposure) and design of the interior space that offering unpredictable sensations, aquariums, subway Zen gardens appropriate during the hot summer days, parking for bikes¸ sustainability etc. Their proposal aims to bring passage back to life in the form of multifunctional as the only concept of sustainability. Also to present urban alternatives to the city administration and citizens, in order to initiate the reaction and realization on site.
How do you like the proposed solutions? We are sure that your suggestions would lead us to the realization. We should do it!
