Herbert Hoover School in Berlin’s Wedding district has a special focus on theatre; this is why the teachers and students wanted an outdoor stage. The project began with a concept week in which various school classes worked on this topic. A small group of students from different classes then developed a design for the stage construction. The project week programme also included an excursion, constructing a model, surveying the school yard and experiments on the site of the future stage. We developed the construction plan from the preliminary design and in 2015, the first construction phase began. The stage was built together with the students over a two-weeks period. There was a ’topping out’ ceremony with theatre performances and then the students took over the stage as a place to chill out at breaktime. During the second construction phase in 2016, wooden platforms were built to create audience seating.
