The Village at Centennial Square at San Francisco State University is a high-density student residence and mixed-use project at the edge of the campus. Sasaki's design aspires to reinstate a metropolitan quality of life on the campus, appropriate to its urban Bay Area setting. The dynamic mix of uses includes 190 student apartments, 100 structured parking spaces, commercial and retail spaces, and a new student services building. The project creates meaningful connections and serves as an important transition between residential zones and the academic core of the campus. Design and construction for the design-build project was completed on a fast-track basis to coincide with the campus's 100-year anniversary.
The residential and mixed-use components of the program are composed to clearly define pedestrian streets at the project's edges while creating a sequence of internally linked outdoor courts. At the west end of the project, a dramatic, soaring gateway to the courtyard spaces creates a focal element for the entire on-campus residential community. While the residential courts differ in character, they share an essential element: the massing of their southern edges is limited to two stories, inviting maximum solar exposure in the often foggy climate. The enclosed quality of the courtyards, their elevated position relative to surrounding grades, and the integration of building circulation elements create a physically secure setting and foster a sense of safety for the residents.
A continuous rhythm of metal panel and glass clad living room bays project beyond the stucco building wall, lending residential scale to the project and welcoming daylight into the living units. Vertical circulation elements are identified as towers and lanterns throughout the project. While the perimeter walls of the building are rendered in a simple, muted color palette, the courtyards feature more saturated, warmer colors contributing to the quality of their intended use.
