In the United States’ first and only UNESCO City of Design, Detroit Month of Design will take over the city next week with an exciting lineup of events to celebrate the creative spirit of Detroit. Presented by Design Core Detroit, the show will include talks, tours, exhibitions, workshops, installations and other immersive experiences that you can participate in every day in September. We’re excited to be a media partner of this unique show once again, and even more excited to announce that Design Milk will be sponsoring the Diversity in Detroit event which will explore the issues around the lack of diversity in the design industry and what we can do to remedy them. Be sure to register for the event here.
With more than 150 participants that will put on 80+ events and projects throughout the month, this year’s show is shaping up to the best one yet. If you’ll be in the area and want to plan your itinerary of design events, here are 5 that we think you should check out:
Rachel Heibel, The Great Lakes Vases Here X Now During the pandemic, artists and designers found purpose and healing through design and created new projects made in isolation. These projects are showcased at this exhibition presented by Form&Seek Collective . It will be interesting to see what designers were able to design and create under unique circumstances.
Design For Good Detroit We’re always interested in a workshop that explores how design can be more sustainable. Presented by AIGA Detroit, this virtual workshop will discuss the ways designers can be leaders in sustainability by the choices they make in their creative processes.
Forces of Nature: AW 22/23 Design Forecast This is another topic related to sustainability but it comes from a trend forecasting perspective. Being connected to nature will no doubt help designers make decisions in their creative processes as well as safeguard the future of the planet. This event will inspire designers, artists, students and other creatives to incorporate nature into their creations.
Face:Detector Artificial intelligence is becoming more prevalent in our world today, so let’s learn more about it. This interactive installation presented by the University of Michigan – Taubman College will explore the computation, hidden assumptions, statistical calculations, and potential biases of artificial intelligence. It might also make you smile! The installation’s facial recognition technology and algorithms will measure and respond to your emotions as you enjoy a scoop of ice cream, in real time!
Moments of Immersion This exhibition will showcase the work of designer Yazmin Dababneh who uses the digital documentation of physical sculptures and natures and translates them into immersive film installations. The sculptures are mesmerizing as they seem familiar yet peculiar all at once.
