The Dune house is a monolith positioned in the shifting landscape of soft white sand on Florida’s Emerald Coast. In contrast to the ephemeral nature of the dunes in which it sits, the house is designed to withstand change. Into its patina, the concrete absorbs the sweltering heat of the summer sun, corrosive salt of the gulf stream, and violent winds and floods of hurricane seasons. Between the interplay of concrete, glass, and raw wood materials, the project preserves the smallest possible distance between the interior, the garden, and the beach at every turn. Thin profile pocketing doors slip into the walls, allowing for an open panorama to the water. The massive lightwell allows for natural lighting and passive cooling. Architectural concrete is softened by white oak, a warm beach glow, and an elaborate entry garden. This is a home built to endure and enhance the environment on which it sits.
