One of the major problems in metropolitan cities such as Los Angeles is the continued increase in homelessness. Economic factors, mental health, and drug/alcohol addiction (add Covid 19 to this list) are making the homeless population to gradually increase at uncontrollable levels. Our studio has begun to study and explore possible alternatives to transitional housing. Using an existing homeless encampment site along a portion of the Los Angeles River, (adjacent to an existing bike path), we are sharing the idea of possibilities for temporary homes that can bring a little bit of stability and dignity to those who need a place to live. We encourage other architects and designers to share their thoughts about how we can help to provide shelter to those who need it the most.
