HKS was tasked to create a highly efficient space in a small urban area at Canary Wharf College Glenworth in London, England.
The Challenge On a compact urban site with significant space constraints, HKS was asked to develop extremely efficient floor plans and adjacencies that could cater to a school’s needs within a reduced footprint.
The Design Solution Through careful analysis of the school’s requirements, efficiencies were developed that allow the design to exceed the number of teaching spaces the original brief had assumed was feasible. Contrasting brick creates a silhouette of the surrounding London skyline, further helping to anchor the school in its neighborhood while creating a strong visual identity that has been adopted as the school’s logo.
The Design Impact Canary Wharf College is a 280-pupil school for ages 4-11. Our work set a benchmark for what’s achievable in future school developments in London’s constrained urban sites. A subtle brick palette was chosen to complement the site’s surroundings and the branding and design ethos of this project is being expanded to two other schools in the city.
