Wood-Walther House is a major alterations and additions to single storey brick and weatherboard cottage in Sydney’s Inner West. The project includes new master bedroom, ensuite, bathroom and mezzanine study.
Previously a dark and south facing terrace, the new additions bring a new sense of light and space into an otherwise tiny floor plan. The buildings tight context and contentious privacy issues required the project to find innovative ways of bringing natural light in: through eccentric openings that reveal themselves at unexpected but inevitable positions.
The project appears to float like an elegantly refined lantern above the existing cottage, and whilst clearly contemporary, it does not undermine the charm of its existing house or its surroundings. New relationships unfold as the mezzanine and high ceilings allow spaces to interlock - rather than be separated by physical walls - and the presence of light through numerous eccentric triangulated windows guide’s the eye through multiple spaces.
