Many historic elements were left untouched in the 306 m² space, retaining the site’s historical essence and providing a quaint contrast to the unit’s modern interior. What distinguishes this conservation house from most others is the unorthodox first floor layout which places the kitchen and dining space right at the entrance. This was done in light of the fact that most parties centre around the food, and this arrangement allows guests to casually mingle with their hosts as they cook.
Since the house was meant for rental, a neutral colour palette was used to suit changing tastes between individual tenants. Bamboo is a recurrent theme throughout the house, from the forecourt garden to the sand-blasted motifs within. 31 Blair Road is an innovative response to the constraints of conservation building, successfully marrying the old with the new to create a charming living space.
Corporate Profile
With a track record of almost 40 years in the industry, ONG&ONG has earned an unparalleled
reputation for integrating skilled architecture, clever interior design, creative environmental branding and sensitive landscape design. Paramount to our success lies in our insistence on servicing our clients with creativity, excellence and commitment. We continually strive to uphold our mission to be the designer of our age – a premier design practice both locally and in the region.
Partnering our clients in their race to the top, ONG&ONG now offers a complete 360º
solution – i.e. a parceled cross-discipline integrated solution, encompassing all aspects of the construction business. We offer a three-pronged 360º solution; namely 360º Design + 360º Engineering + 360º Management. 360º Design encompasses urban planning, architecture, landscape, interiors and environmental branding (graphics). Engineering 360º offers civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing. Management 360º provides development, project, construction and place management.
In addition to projects in Singapore, ONG&ONG has also completed large-scale developments
regionally. This has prompted the setting up of offices in China, Vietnam, India and Malaysia. In-depth knowledge of the local context, culture and regulations allow us to better understand our clients’ needs. We are an ISO14001 certified practice and consistently strive to meet and exceed our clients’ expectations. To grow our international reputation, ONG&ONG has now set up an office in New York, USA.
Corporate Philanthropy
The spirit of philanthropy is deeply embedded in the culture of ONG&ONG. Education is a key
component of ONG&ONG’s philanthropic effort, centering on the architectural community. The ONG&ONG Travelling Fellowship was first established in 1997 with the objective of allowing gifted undergraduates the opportunity to pursue the knowledge and experience of the built environment through independent travel. In 2000, the Ong Siew May Professorship was set up to pave the way for world eminent practitioners to lecture at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture. This exchange and transfer of knowledge is elemental in grooming the architects of tomorrow. ONG&ONG also sponsors the BCA-Industry Built Environment Scholarship.
In addition to our commitment in supporting design excellence, ONG&ONG established a
Preceptorship Programme with Rice University since 2000 and Internship Prizes with UC Berkeley, Harvard University and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Columbia.
Corporate History
Founding partners, the late Mr.Ong Teng Cheong and Mrs.Ong Siew May, established Ong & Ong
