London-based architectural practice, Michaelis Boyd, has completed the design of Clubhouse by ZO., a comprehensive new suite of wellness, lifestyle and corporate amenities and services for tenants and tenant employees at the Rockefeller Center, New York.

The space, the first of its kind in North America, was conceived by Tishman Speyer in an effort to create a happier, healthier and more productive workforce for employees. Located on levels 33-34 of the iconic Rockefeller Center, Michaelis Boyd has created inspired, innovative and differentiated co-working areas, lounge spaces and external terraces.

The 33rd floor is characterised by a rich, moody and refined design concept. The 2,200sq ft internal space is divided into an entrance lobby, open lounge, conference room, multi-purpose lounge area, sleep pods, a pantry and two expansive outdoor terraces with views of the New York cityscape.

The impressive entrance lobby of Clubhouse by ZO. features a bespoke curved reception desk made of American Walnut and velvet fluted panels. Large table lamps provide a warm illumination and a welcoming ambience differentiating the space from the office environment of the below floors.

Michaelis Boyd black metal crittall screens compliment the interior of space whilst dividing the entrance lobby from the neighbouring multi-purpose reception room.

The multi-purpose reception room is an inviting lounge space. Its design is inspired by traditional British member’s clubs and Michaelis Boyd has used colour and pattern to create a welcoming and relaxed traditional interior with a contemporary twist. Michaelis Boyd has brought the space to life with deep velvet armchairs, leather Chesterfield sofas and an eclectic mix of vintage patterned rugs. Walls are panelled and painted in dramatic rich blue jewel tones with full-height velvet curtains allowing the space to be flexibly divided. Large ball pendants and dark engineered oak parquet flooring add a sophisticated glamour to the space. Existing ceiling ducts were left exposed and painted black by Michaelis Boyd, providing a sharp industrial contrast to the classic feel of the traditional furnishings within the space.

Employing break-out spaces for people to socialise, moving from the kitchenette area, the open lounge provides a small number of seats and leads to a small conference room and two outdoor terraces. The terraces, facing the Hudson and East River respectively provide a variety of seating arrangements from modular banquettes to high-bar seating, all of which have been arranged by Michaelis Boyd, so visitors face the impressive mid-town skyline. Both external terraces are designed with seating which can be easily moved to allow for outdoor yoga and other events.

Retaining the dramatic existing steel staircase between the two floors Michaelis Boyd has created an integral focal point to the space. Leading up to the 34th floor the design concept has an altogether different feel. In bold contrast, it provides a lighter, more playful contemporary atmosphere than its lower counterpart. The 1710 sq. ft space includes a mezzanine lounge which Michaelis Boyd has characterised with light oak floors, upholstered furniture in bright colours, brass mood lighting and colourful decorative specialist polished plaster feature walls. Additional amenity spaces include a snug lounge, changing rooms and individual relaxation pods.
