Markus Studtmann
Markus Studtmann

painting with light & vita
Painting with Light. What’s the structural essence of scenes of our visually complex environment? What basic moods do those scenes convey? The Berlin based fine art photographer Markus Studtmann answers these questions by decomposing and reassembling images in order to reduce them to their essential geometry and amplifying their perceived mood. He calls this process “Painting with Light”: although light and colors are captured with the camera, they where afterwards repainted in the digital darkroom in order to fit the artists vision and impressions. This results in unique images which extend beyond the realm of the camera and often resemble paintings or graphics.
Vita. Markus Studtmann is a fine art photographer and psychologist living and working in Berlin, Germany. He studied philosophy, psychology and neurobiology at Bielefed university and holds a Ph.D. in psychology. He worked as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Greifswald and the Max Plax Planck Institute of Human Development in Berlin, where he was also a member of the art committee. His research is focussed on the perception and facial expression of emotions and has been presented on many international conferences and published in scientific journals and books.
His passion for photography started more than 20 years ago with black & white portrait, theatre and experimental photography. Since then he focussed on projects like dancing, facial expressions of emotions and urban landscapes. In recent years he developed a deeper passion for architecture and abstraction. His images have been published in magazines, books and newspapers. He loves the process of finding the perfect composition, experimenting in the digital darkroom to the sound of good music, and the smell of tasty coffee in the air.
