MNLA Principal Signe Nielsen
MNLA Principal Signe Nielsen was the joint venture partner on the team that prepared a comprehensive master plan and design guidelines for the 550-acre Hudson River Park. This plan is premised on reclaiming the waterfront for public benefit. More than two decades since the plan was completed, the park is a valuable resource to area residents and visitors.
As part of the Tribeca section of Hudson River Park, MNLA’s design for Pier 25 extends 1,000 feet into the water and offers a diverse range of recreational and educational opportunities. The pier demonstrates the rich array of active recreational opportunities that can coexist with beautiful places to stroll or pause along the water. The venues are distinct yet seamlessly intertwined to allow people to move comfortably among them. The multiple offerings at the park grew out of a close collaboration with the client and local community. The playground nearest the park entry leads to an 18-hole mini-golf course. Sand volleyball courts give way to a multi-purpose turf field. At the pier’s western end, a viewing platform provides a place for quiet contemplation and enjoyment of the expansive river views.
The design encompasses a holistic view of sustainability that includes revenue-generating venues for on-going park maintenance, promotes public health and active lifestyles for all ages, and achieves a high standard of environmental sustainability.
