Connie Zhou, the 25-year-old architectural photographer was born in China, but moved from Shanghai to New York with her entire family when she was five years old. Her father, who is a graphic designer, encouraged her artistic ambitions and led her to the career of photography. She started with cityscapes, but soon found interests in shooting buildings and structures individually. To look at her portfoli0 is to see some of the world’s most distinctive architecture. Her study experience of documentary photography permeates into her works. Captured in a documentary style, the images of inanimate structures convey a sense of intimacy. Zhou loves “futuristic”. “I like finding buildings that are more futuristic than others. I can find beauty in any building.” she says. And symmetry is another important element often portrayed in her works. Before the shoot, she always do a scout and determine when the light is best. With both interiors and exteriors, 99 percent of the work is about finding the right angle, helping to explain why her works can always bring us new surprises. Zhou is eager to expand her repertoire, seeking new subjects or spaces to photograph. She is not a photographer who sits still but remains on the prowl for new and dynamic spaces to photograph.
