In 2014 Carve was invited by Idealiza Urbanismo to collaborate on the design for Parque Una, a new neighbourhood park in Pelotas (Brazil). From the outset it was clear that our strategy should focus on actively involving the community to create a neighborhood designed for and by the locals.
By reorganizing the traffic flows, we optimized the usable space and created room for a green core: a neighbour space that can be easily filled with all kinds of human activity rather than being dictated and dominated by cars.
Located on a play island and overlooking the central lake, a ongoing linear 'Whoosh' structure curved up in three loops invites kids to climb up, balance, rest or run around. Fully visible from afar, the play zone is also populated by a swings' circle and a play hill with tunnels and slides that certainly invites families to play together.
The sport zone has an evident multi-functional structure. Each element constituting the design is a 'social catalyst' able to allow many different uses, widening its public and the possibilities. The sculptural tribune acts as a backdrop, ball-catcher, seating spot all in ones. The multi-purpose sport court enables different games on the same space. Towards the water edge, the linear steps are meant to rest, skate as well as for parcour sessions.
All in all, Park Una is a lively, active and inclusive public space inviting to users of all ages and backgrounds to socialize, play and relax. We are really pleased to have contributed to this aspirational project, a great example of place making: creating public space with and for the community.
