BRIGHTON HOUSE

This spacious residence is located in Brighton of the same name on the banks of Melbourne Bay, and it occupies an equally spacious area. The original home needs to be integrated with contemporary relevance, but also needs to establish a more thoughtful connection with the site.

By using the roof cavity to create an add

itional level and drawing the overall volume of the house to the rear of the site, Adam Kane Architects has carefully crafted a series of interconnected areas. The studios well-known minimalist push-pull geometric method creates a sense of balance and harmony in the process.

The entrance on the first floor provides a very different experience, passing through the original heritage features. The Edwardian character and charm of this residence remains intact on the street to commemorate its origin and connection to the history of the area, while the new part is quietly located at the rear, with a central spiral staircase marking the old to new The transition is like a sculpture in its own home.

The newly formed open-plan living area on the first floor is surrounded by full-height glass and thin frames, offering uninterrupted garden views. Looking back, the upper level is like an expressive cantilever, located above the lower level, keeping balance when its crumbling.

On the lower floors, the existing form of the front hall is preserved and restored, and light oak floors connect each room to create a feeling of flowing into the new room. Ascending upward, the additional layer optimizes the unused volume of the original roof, and then extends outward to form a master suite, accessed through its spacious dressing room and suite.

A hole was dug down and an additional basement was inserted under the original house to store the owner’s impressive collection of cars.

The house has two entrances, one from the garage below, leading to the newly formed kitchen and open-plan dining room, living in the middle of the house, and the existing original entrance from the street. The garage has become a display space through simple and concise concrete wall lines and linear lighting, an ideal backdrop for the impressive series.
