M A S T E R  T H E S I S  P R O J E C T Discussed at IUAV, Venice in march 2015   A B S T R A C T The provincial landscape centered on the suburban residence is repeatedly showing the contrast between a web of lonely buildings, isolated at the center of a small site and indifferent to the collective space, and islands of homogeneous neighborhoods of residential public buildings constructed by the government .These districts of public housing have been characterized since the war era by a peripheral connotation: isolated and far from the city center, following on from the logic that brought the public action to expropriate low cost agricultural territories for the implementation of the new residential interventions.Born to be opposed to the urban town income, located on the edge of the city along the precarious boundary between town and country, they have been the same time made ​​accessible and equipped with infrastructure and standards of urban planning, being consequently transformed in an active ​​subject in the urban development of the territory hey were part of. The "public city" can still be felt today as an exception inside the landscape of suburban periphery , of the isolated and independent way of life. And here lies the greatest concentration of public space, inside a urban development model that did not leave room for public space, open spaces and relations, physically confined to the physical dimension of the street.In this context, the public housing embraces a set of spaces marked with rich resources, that can accommodate activities, equipment and services .These are potential reservoirs of shared space and opportunities for "local communities” and they can become the basis of everyday life not only of the individual "neighborhood", but also of the entire area around them, turning it into a set of new urban centers.
