Located in Arruda dos Vinhos county, Jardim 40 is a project of a villa’s pool house and refurbishment of its courtyard, where the existing garden and construction was obsolete. The intention was to restore it, turning it into a pleasant outdoor space for family and friends’ gatherings. Respecting the limits of the site as existing, the design went through a simple process of keeping the memory of the place, with the proposal of new materials inspired in a Mediterranean identity. 

The pavement layout in the courtyard was completely redesigned. The large steps in smoothed concrete create a contrast with the pavement around the pool in herringbone terracotta tiles. The pavement around the pool then continues towards the pool house’s interior, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor areas. The pool itself, in white, stands out as a new element among the different materials of the envolving pavements.

The design of the pool house is based on the furniture and fit-out elements layout that shape the different areas - the kitchen, dining area and lounge. Even though the pool house is internally divided in these areas with their own identity, the materiality of all elements is in harmony and enhances one single atmosphere in this space. The kitchen, which is the most important area, is also the largest one. Its key element is the center island in stone, setting the symmetry of the room. Artificial light was placed surgically inside and outside. It is designed in order to provide different levels of ambiences, according to the functionality of the space.

Jardim 40 is an architectural and interior design project by FMJPC, focusing on the redesign and update of a space with a simple gesture, recovering its memories and providing new functions by usingmostly primary materials.
