The major redevelopment of Australia Fair Shopping Centre, a multi-level regional centre, has delivered a vibrant and contemporary retail experience in the heart of the Gold Coast’s traditional CBD. It has become the catalyst for the wider Southport area rejuvenation and revival for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
ThomsonAdsett’s work involved upgrading the centre’s Scarborough Street façade and entrance. It also included designing an interface with the G:link light rail and neighbouring Chinatown, a major expansion to Coles, plus makeovers internally to amenities, food court and malls.
ThomsonAdsett's selection of design elements reflects the theme established by the significant makeover of the Australia Fair Metro building to the west side of Scarborough Street.
The Australia Fair Metro building was previously tired and mostly vacant. The architects realigned malls and entrances to create better customer flow.
Australia Fair Shopping Centre has a longstanding history on the Gold Coast. The Centre opened in 1983 and was originally known as Scarborough Fair, before undergoing several major renovations and re-opening as Australia Fair in 1990. At the time, the Centre was the first of its kind in Australia. It has since undergone numerous expansions and renovations.
