In 2012, the Chicago Park District procured site design group, ltd. to design renovations to three existing playgrounds on Chicago’s North and Northwest sides. Located only miles from one another, the parks; Mellin, Merryman, and Merrimac were bid as one design and construction package. Each park presented its own characteristics, challenges, and outcomes, but shared an overarching goal of creating unique, playful, and innovative play spaces in small urban lots. The completed parks are an exemplary illustration of low-cost playground renovations that result in distinctive, dynamic, and challenging play spaces, demonstrating that even the smallest playground can depart from the traditional post and platform structure.
