Summer is here, and with it, Nils’s inner voice is becoming louder, yearning for more time in the outdoors. Traveling in a motorhome definitely has its advantages for him—the manifestation of his dream of change and adventure. Staying clear of the usually overbooked guest-houses and hotels of peak season, Nils’s life on wheels not only enables him to always keep his things around, but also to determine his itinerary freely and independently. It even makes it possible to travel in the colder seasons, though this is not the rule. He is exposed to regional weather conditions, fair or bad, but he can turn round at any time and continue the drive to a different place.
Requirements to the vehicle are manifold and diverse: starting with the destinations that Nils plans to travel to and their different climate conditions—mountains, seaside, city, summer, winter, inside and out, rain and sunshine—to the sports he wants to do, plus equipment—biking, golfing, swimming, skiing—and to sleeping comfort and the amenity value of the individual spaces—by oneself, as a couple, or with friends—there are many things that a motorhome must be able to cater to.
Most of the time, Nils takes along too much. On extended road trips, a varied wardrobe is a necessity. Nils also likes to be prepared for different sports—which includes the equipment that he brings along. As regards air-conditioning, he is well equipped in his motorhome both for cold weather and storms and for heat and beach life—and, on occasion, also for an elegant dinner, for sometimes he also travels in company. All of this naturally takes generous storage space.
Once Nils has prepared for a trip, and everything is packed, and he is filled with anticipation, he drives his motorhome out to a place in nature where he pulls up, opening the door and, if the weather suits, puts out the chairs and table. He then likes to open the awning and goes about preparing a meal in the kitchen. On rainy days, Nils retreats to the sleeping area or the dinette to read a book. After dinner, he washes the dishes by hand or puts them in the small dishwasher. On most days, he loves hanging out in front of his motorhome, chitchatting with friends. If necessary, the heating or air conditioning is on; most of the time, however, the windows and skylights are open to get some fresh air. In the evenings, Nils pulls down the blinds, and it gets pitch-black dark in the motorhome. He turns the music off, locks the door and goes to bed.
The next morning, Nils wakes up, opening the blind and enjoying the view from his bed. If possible, he has his coffee and breakfast outside, greeting the morning. An awning protects him from the sun or a sudden rain shower. Before taking to the road, he still uses the bathroom or the shower. He quickly stows away the outdoor furniture und gets ready to roll. He drives into a city, parking his motorhome in a large parking lot for tourist buses. He changes his clothes and takes the bicycle or the small motorbike to go to the city center. Before that, he opens the skylight to ventilation position to let in a breath of fresh air. He locks the vehicle and activates the alarm system.
After coming back, he spends the night at the lot or drives out to the green surroundings ofthe city—and there, at the end of a long day, in a moment of deep tranquil satisfaction, he catches himself thinking: It’s all good.
