Since 1850, Libutti family has a very long tradition in pastry art and bakery. They decided to export one of their traditional products, the “cannolo lucano”, in the city of Rome, asking me to create a shop completely dedicated to this unique dessert.
The most pressing request from the client was to keep the budget for the renovation and the equipment below 35.000 €. The space consists of two floors, each of around 30 sqm, one is a ground floor and the other is a basement. For this kind of activity, the municipal’s building code requires for a staff’s bathroom with antechamber, a dressing room, a storage area and a kitchen which has to be at least 8 sqm.
Due to the lack of space and the low budget, I decided to use a minimal amount of furniture and materials, tried to create a proportionate and balanced space. The idea behind the project was inspired by the style from the ‘50s, because of the tradition of the Libutti family. The main colors that were used are an offwhite and “carta da zucchero” (baby blue) that means “sugar paper”, the paper used for packing sugar at the time.
