The Strait of Malacca, with a history of 1,600 years of navigation, is a calm and mysterious sea. It used to be the link between Eastern and Western civilization, and the throat of China’s Maritime Silk Road.
On the coast of Malacca City, after five years of creation, design and construction, the famous Chinese director Wang Chaoge finally brought us a world-class situational experience drama — the world premiere of ‘’Encore Malacca” in July 2018. Since then, the “Encore Malacca “ itself and the theaters have become the new landmark of modern art in the Straits of Malacca.-- 建筑与城市,Bird View-Relationship of the City and the Architecture ©傅兴建筑摄影
Covering an area of 4.75 hectares and accommodating more than 2,000 people, the Melaka Theatre, is Malaysia’s first 360-degree rotating auditorium tailored for this stunning live performance. It looks out over the deep and vast distance, silent and still, as if it coexisted with the clouds and the sea, narrating and recording the peace, dignity and splendor of the Straits and the city.
The city of Malacca, born by the sea, is both ancient and modern, peaceful and passionate, mysterious and open. The “Encore Malacca” Theatre is also built along the sea, on the water side. It seems to be a trace left behind which nobody knows when, singing and whispering with the world, the clouds, and the gods.
It is an oriental building with deep cultivation, restrained mystery and huge energy behind its calm and dignity.▼鸟瞰-- 建筑与海,Bird View-Relationship of the Ocean and the Architecture ©傅兴建筑摄影
The ‘’Encore Malacca” theater has the simplest geometry, but changes all the time within four seasons and 24 hours. Its boundaries, expressions, meanings, colors and shapes are ever-changing and gorgeous, following the alternating of weathers and scenes. It breaks through the traditional architectural design category, as an innovation of “concept”, giving the building her own life. The breakthrough of architectural concept is to question the world and the future, which is more unusual than the physical presentation.

The ‘’Encore Malacca” theatre is a cuboid with a construction area of 24,000 square meters, a total height of 32.5 meters and a side length of about 100 meters. The building’s exterior is composed of two layers, a white box with a blue inside. Blue implies the sea, as well as the indigo tones of Chinese blue and white porcelain and old buildings in Malacca.▼建筑南立面-LED 的表现,South facade of the building-The Expression of the LED ©傅兴建筑摄影
The inner surface of the building is a blue paint wall, while the outer surface is mainly composed of more than 50,000 white diamond-shaped metal aluminum plates. A number of arcs recessed into the top are wrapped by more than 12,000 pieces of 1800 square meters of special-shaped curved glass curtain wall, which can reflect the surrounding environment or perform itself by LED changes.

The innovative application of the LED screen is also one of the initiatives of this scheme. After continuous research and exploration, architects, curtain wall consultants and material suppliers have assembled LED modules and curtain wall glass into a united module. Finally, a huge LED display screen was formed. The LED screen is no longer a “scar” of the building, but a part of the architectural form. With the lightening of the LED, the expression of the building has changed dramatically, which creatively extends the use and expression of various building materials.

In terms of building techniques and energy conservation, the ” Encore Malacca “theatre has taken a lot into consideration. First of all, fine sunshade and ventilation are the basis of the local passive energy saving technology.Based on Malacca’s unique climate characteristics and the operation characteristics of the theatre, the architects raised the viewing floor as a whole, after studying the characteristics of the local traditional residential high-rise houses. Passive energy-saving technologies are creatively applied by a first-level ventilation corridor, ventilation shaft, side-height windows and skylight system, which greatly optimizes the indoor comfort in a natural state and reduces the operating costs.

The ” Encore Malacca “theater is the unexpected encounter of cloud and sea, movement and still, east and west. It is not only a subversion of traditional design concepts, but also another crossing beyond the wonderful performance. Also, the ” Encore Malacca “theatre complex will also become the embodiment of Malacca City, standing on the side of the Straits of Malacca and witnessing yet another blend and symbiosis of Chinese and Malaysian culture in the new era… South facade of the building-Relationship of the Ocean and the Architecture ©傅兴建筑摄影
