The 300-square-meter apartment is located in Steven Holl’s most famous condominium in China. The original design of the apartment had six rooms and an kitchen open to the living room. The first thing we noticed was that the service room had one of the best views of the apartment and the kitchen and dining room were small in comparison to the dimensions of the apartment.
We demolished the whole apartment, leaving only the basic structure. Our client is passionate about plants, so we made a green pillar to hide the structure and pipes to create a fluid and spacious open space.
A corridor with a curved wall covered in felt and cork is the first element that people see when entering the apartment. The corridor opens to the right side, welcoming the people to the social area and reduces on the left side where the private area is.
We created a library/tatami studio that integrates with the corridor by opening a big sliding door. One guest room, two main rooms and the kid’s room are personalized to each member of the family. High standard finishing such as Danish felt; Italian wooden floor, mosaics and stucco; German hinges and rails; and Australian wooden panels were the materials used in this project.
