New Book Release by Atelier 11: A Little Bit of Beijing

Created by Beijing-based architectural practice Atelier 11, A Little Bit of Beijing is a hybrid and mixture of anything. It is a sophisticated illustrated book, a convenient travel guide, a photography collection with unique perspectives, and a set of accurate technical drawings. It is a publication made with patience, time, fineness, devotion, high-quality images, and with the aim to document the most interesting spots in Beijing. It is a collection of realistic portraits of Beijing, depicted with seriousness and emotions.

It rejects promotions on “must-buy” or “must-try” as all the other travel guides include, but advocates specific and independent urban wander. It discards romantic and warm virtual world fabricated in most illustrated books, but encourages realistic observations on the site. It abandons digital camera, single lens relax and splendid colors, but returns to films, dark room, and a black and white imagery world. It stays away from design concepts by architects and planners, but focuses on grass-roots buildings and natural development of the city.

The first issue of A Little Bit of Beijing documents the areas of San Li Tun and 798 in Beijing. Both of them emerged in recent years as the highlights of the city. Two panoramic axonometric projections reveal the urban space in San Li Tun and 798 without leaving any hidden details. They are like 3D maps as complex as labyrinths and give the reader a completely new perspective to get lost in those familiar yet strange urban corners. 10 color illustrations for 10 carefully selected sites are characterized with overlooking angles, different architectural styles, and Sempé-style figures spreading all over the illustrations. But the color schemes and lines are obviously influenced by OMA’s sketches from their early years. Along with the photography, axonometric projections, and brief comments extracted from the Internet for each location, the reader’s curiosity over these places will be roused by traversing different representational media. Black and white photos running through the whole book have caught the most inviting moments in San Li Tun and 798, as a mood or, like what Daido Moriyama described, as a short story. Furthermore, 3 articles, Stage – from San Li Tun to 798, Start from Documentation, and Memories of My Body, enrich the content of the book with some academic speculations by introducing the inspirations from Suprematism and Society of the Spectacle, and the discussion on the death and life of cities.

A Little Bit of Beijing is a subversive experiment with the attempt to secularize academic theories, to refine the meaning of travel, to make illustration closer to the reality, to turn technical drawings into art, to encourage spontaneous photography, and to cast new light on grass roots.

《一点儿北京》的第一册记录了北京三里屯和798艺术区两个地方，它们是北京近年涌现出的城市亮点。两张全景式的轴测图将三里屯和798复杂的城市空间一览无余的呈现出来，它们是三维的地图，复杂如同迷宫，让你在一个全新的视角迷失在这些熟悉或陌生的城市角落。10张彩色绘本描绘了10个精心选择的现场。俯瞰的角度，各式各样的建筑，以及散布在各处行行色色的小人俱有桑贝的主题，但设色和线条又明显受到了OMA草期图纸的影响。再配合照片，轴测图和三言两语的网评，让你在穿越不同的表现媒介时对现场产生强烈的渴望。贯穿始终的黑白照片把三里屯和798最动人的瞬间裁剪下来，作为一种心情；亦或如森山大道所说一部短篇小说。3篇文章《戏台——从798到三里屯》《从记录开始》和《身体的记忆》则把内容转回到学术思辨，在此我们思考至上主义，谈论景观社会，讨论城市的死与生，挖掘本书更深层的意义。《一点儿北京》是一次颠覆尝试，它让学术世俗，让旅游高雅，让绘本真实，让图纸艺术，让摄影自主，让草根发光。
