The assignment was given to COPLAN AG, an engineering firm from Eggenfelden with wide experience of building and renovating schools. The project included an extension of the school building with a west and a north wing, both with a flat roof. The west wing was connected to the existing building and an extra storey was added above the north wing. As a result, the existing playground was not only extended, but also partially covered.

Rockpanel boards were chosen after a comprehensive selection procedure. Initially the architects had suggested a timber façade, but the client was concerned that this would require too much maintenance in the long term. In addition, he wanted a vibrant and child-friendly façade. Eventually Rockpanel boards were chosen owing to the wide range of colours, easy handling, durability and easy maintenance.

The boards were coated with a transparent, water-repellent and self-cleaning ProtectPlus layer. So rain and dirt make no impression on the surface. Even graffiti – which is often found in schools - can easily be removed using a special detergent. The client was also reassured by the fire protection provided by Rockpanel boards and the environmentally friendly nature of the material. Standard Rockpanel boards meet European fire class B-s2, d0 for building materials (cf. EN 13501-1). BRE Global, which belongs to the British Building Research Establishment, gave the environmental qualities of the Rockpanel façade boards A+ / A ratings.

Architect Dietmar Wöhler was won over by the choice of available Rockpanel Colours façade. “The wide range of Rockpanel Colours was the deciding factor. It was the perfect alternative to our original plans. We had total freedom in the design. The façade consists of three different shades of green. They were fitted irregularly and therefore create a varied and vivid façade. Slanting joints further underpin the effect and avoid an austere and monotone panel arrangement. We were able to install the façade exactly as we wanted thanks to the wide range of colours and because Rockpanel is particularly easy to work with.”
