Hacker has designed Discovery Hall, the academic hub for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs at the University of Washington Bothell.

Discovery Hall will accommodate the increasing program and enrollment capacity of the University of Washington Bothell, serving as an academic hub for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs. The building will house classlabs for general sciences, life sciences, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software development and geographic information system, as well as a 200-seat lecture hall, classrooms, and faculty offices. The building design is focused on fostering interdisciplinary learning and collaboration throughout, culminating in the Collaboratory, a room dedicated to group work located prominently over the plaza.

The site is perched on a wooded hillside above the wetlands of North Creek with views toward to the Cascade Mountains to the east. The project incorporates principal elements of a new Campus Master Plan, including a stair climb along the north side of the building, the Crescent Path and West Campus Lane, and a new plaza at the heart of the existing campus.

Sustainability is a particular focus of the University and the design team. The building is oriented east-west for optimal solar control with the use of daylight, sunshades, and light controls. Operable windows in the classrooms and offices increase occupants’ control. Chilled beams, displacement ventilation, and heat recovery will further decrease energy use. Stormwater makes its way to the campus’ extraordinary wetlands in a cascading day lit runnel along the north stair climb, culminating in a water feature in the plaza.
