The prosperity of the physical world has inspired an unprecedented yearning for nature. In this yearning, the primitive sentiment of human beings as individuals or as a group seems to have found its due belonging. However, influenced by the development of science, technology and humanism, people’s aspiration for nature has changed from primitive naturalism to modern naturalism. That means the shift from simple and brutal consumption of nature to living in harmony with nature. At the same time, it also emphasizes the integration and symbiosis of nature and human civilisation. People began to be happy to settle for false illusions when the human entered a new internet era where the real and the unreal, the legitimate and the illegitimate coexisted. In this case, the meaning of nature exists only in the conscious pursuit of human beings. But the reality is that stacked on top of this situation are countless copies or reproductions of copies of copies. However, in reality, there arecountless copies or copies of duplicates stacked on top of it.

In this project, we have tried to echo this primitive sentiment of the human through the two natural materials of travertine and wood. To create a realistic and touchable natural living space for the client in Shanghai where seem to be a jungle of steel. We wanted it to be both abstract and realistic, with a strong expressionist sentiment. Meanwhile, we hope to present a spatial atmosphere like a combination of the paintings of Edward Hopper and Mark Rothko.

The project is located in a high-rise residential building in the centre of Shanghai. The original space of it was a low storey height, closed layout and insufficient light, so the overall space needed to be optimised. Although the original natural materials are usually rougher in surface and not conducive to reflecting light, the client wanted a bright and comfortable feeling of living in space while still maintaining the original natural atmosphere. The client is always greedy and as designers, we have to meet the various needs of the client. Therefore, we have made considerable adjustments to the layout even under the situation of the original structure with a weak variability. For example, the two small rooms on the south side were combined into one large room for the master bedroom. The closed kitchen was opened and turned into an extension of the living space. And the two small bathrooms were combined into one large bathroom. These changes to the layout have opened up the previously closed and dark rooms and allowed natural light to enter more easily. In terms of materials, in addition to natural travertine and wood, we have also used a mass of white paint to make the space light more uniform and brighter. Meanwhile, we tried to use the comfortable fabric and soft tones in the soft furnishings to make the space more livable.

The whole layout is divided into east and west by the central load-bearing wall running north and south, with the open living and dining space to the east and the more private master bedroom and children’s bedroom to the west. Travertine and wood, both natural materials, are used extensively on the walls and floors of the open spaces, and the original holes in the travertine surfaces have been deliberately retained to maintain the rough surface texture. The dining table and stools are also custom-made in travertine, with metallic chandeliers and oak dining chairs to continue the natural feel. To add dramatic tension to the ambience of the space, we have paired the living room with an exquisite natural marble bespoke tea table and a sculptural display table. Besides, the TV cabinet has been designed to add interest to the living room by opening and closing the sliding doors in three ways of display. The balcony is elevated by two steps and made into a wooden floor, which serves as a warm and comfortable reading area.

The master bedroom is designed as a large suite with two south-facing windows, providing a transparent space with plenty of light. It is a functional blend of lounge and office areas and has a triple separation design in the main bathroom with a vertically integrated basin to naturally separate the office and lounge areas. The master bedroom still makes extensive use of travertine and wood to continue the originality of the space, and the increased proportion of wood gives the master bedroom a warmer appearance.

The master bathroom and guest bathroom are all tiled with natural travertine to create a sense of the primitive of bathing in nature. Changfa Residence is our abstract expression of the primordial sentiment of human beings yearning for nature. It is also an expression of our desire to keep a proper distance from the illusory and highly homogenised internet society. and continues the pursuit of a primitive, natural and poetic space atmosphere in MANN Architects.
