Sparking Change

Invited by Interni, MCA collaborated with Roca to create the installation “Sparking Change”, which was exhibited at the University of Milan in the Cross Vision themed area of Interni’s 70th anniversary.

From pale yellow to vermilion, from light blue to Klein blue, the brilliant variations interpret the wonderful relationship between colour and temperature in the ceramic kiln. 1200 3D printed bricks made of recycled ceramic materials form a 4.5 metre high semi-circular backdrop with undulating lines. This fits perfectly with the triangular shape of the exhibition area. Ceramic bricks of varying heights are transformed into lounge seating, unleashing the infinite possibilities of space and function.

The design was inspired by the world’s first zero-carbon electric tunnel kiln for sanitary ceramics commissioned by Roca. The curved shapes and colour gradients are a visual metaphor for the gradually increasing operating temperatures during the firing of ceramics. Embedded figures, showing the precise temperatures required at each stage of production, ensure the excellent quality of the ceramic product. The structural bricks are made of natural raw clay and recyclable ceramic materials and are 3D printed to minimise the environmental impact of the production process.

Measuring 50x40x25 cm, the bricks are designed to be self-supporting and dry-assembled, which not only enhances their aesthetic appeal, but also makes them easy to dismantle and recycle for reuse in future events or installations. The changing colours guide the viewer, and scanning the QR code on the brick instantly transports the viewer into a virtual world, a unique immersive experience that brings the mystery of Roca’s new zero-carbon tunnel kiln to life. “Sparking Change” embodies the sustainability principles of recycling and decarbonisation, emphasising the reuse and sustainable transformation of materials, and demonstrates the positive environmental impact of Roca’s transformative innovation, the world’s first zero-carbon electric tunnel kiln for sanitary ceramics. Leading a paradigm shift in the ceramic production industry, the event will stimulate the public to think about and explore sustainable development.

Urban Mining

——Mario Cucinella “Urban Mining envisions cities as potential reservoirs for the future. This concept views urban spaces as ecosystems capable of deconstructing and transforming themselves using their own materials, much like natural processes. It promotes a circular approach to architecture, where the creative process takes center stage.” ——Mario Cucinella

Inspired by the European Agenda for Sustainable Development, this installation delves into the theme of the future city from a regenerative perspective, wherein human-made spaces are not perceived as detracting from nature, but rather draw inspiration from it, seeking self-regeneration. Urban Mining is conceived as a process aimed at reclaiming and managing the “anthropogenic heritage” (materials extracted and transformed into infrastructures, buildings, and everyday items), with the goal of rejuvenating matter and reutilizing it. The redesign began with a simple, somewhat humble, everyday object: a wooden box used for picking fruit and vegetables. This “unassuming” object is assembled during the farming season to form an urban cultural landscape full of potential and infinite possibilities. Later disassembled again, the wooden crate resumes its original use, spreading its recycling concept as production activities are dispersed throughout the agricultural sector.

La Città Ideale the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka

Landscape at dusk ©MC A

The design concept is based on the fifteenth-century painting “The Ideal City”, one of the most emblematic images of the Italian Renaissance, which is housed in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Urbino. The “Ideal City” incorporates the traditional elements of piazzas, theatres and gardens typical of Italian culture. Through Renaissance paintings, the proportions of urban space and a free social atmosphere, it builds a social organism in which people, art, environment and history and culture are in harmony, representing a new concept of the city. A manifestation of the Italian national vision of social space.
