Once a historic agricultural farmstead, the 20th century high-desert homestead set within a tall canopy of cottonwood and elm trees had become a degraded and unproductive landscape. With the vision to provide ‘sustenance for the table,’ the landscape restoration commits itself to the owner’s spirit of stewardship and philanthropic efforts, demonstrating excellence of how productive garden design can also benefit its surrounding community and citizens. For example, dried grapevines are used to create winter wreaths, given as gifts by the owner, while excess fruits and vegetables from the gardens are distributed to staff and to local food banks and schools throughout central New Mexico.
