In May, the unique close-to-nature suites at Eriksberg's new hotel Arken will open. The furniture and interiors of the three suites were created by the design duo Bernadotte & Kylberg, who has also set the theme for the other 23 rooms in the spectacular wooden hotel building. Furniture, lighting, art, flooring, and carpets have been specially designed for Eriksberg.
This is Bernadotte & Kylberg’s second hotel project in a relatively short span of time, following their widely acclaimed “A Midsummer Night's Dream” suite at the renowned Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. Here, however, there is an unmistakable contrast in the surroundings – from the snow and ice in northern Sweden to the Scandinavian savannah of southern Sweden. The Eriksberg project also involved a higher degree of design work and production of furniture and various design objects.
”Eriksberg is a unique and beautiful place in Blekinge. It is an experience totally on nature's own terms. It is precisely this encounter with nature that we want to capture by blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors,” says Carl Philip Bernadotte.
To create a design that fully reflects the spirit of Eriksberg, Bernadotte & Kylberg visited Eriksberg on many occasions throughout the project. They drew inspiration from Eriksberg's rich flora and fauna and allowed the design of the rooms to become an extension of the surrounding natural beauty.
“We were tasked with creating and realizing a total interior design vision for three suites on three different floors of the new Arken hotel. The suites are named Urberg (Primeval Mountain), Skog (Forest), and Himmel (Sky), each reflecting the soul and natural diversity of Eriksberg. We designed everything from the furniture to light fittings and carpets. We hope and believe that guests will enjoy the suites as much as we enjoyed creating them,” says Oscar Kylberg.
The three themes of the suites – Urberg (meaning Primeval Mountain), Skog (Forest), and Himmel (Sky) – are also reflected in the color schemes of the hotel’s other guest rooms. In the suites, guests are greeted by exquisite craftsmanship and exclusive material choices that harmonize with the elements of nature. This creates a unique environment, where every detail has a story to tell.
In addition to being creatively responsible for the overall concept, Bernadotte & Kylberg designed all the furniture and design elements, including armchairs, beds, sofa beds, desks, chairs, coffee tables, light fittings, bathroom commodes, and an exclusive bar cabinet called ”Eriksbergsskåpet”. The furniture designed by the design duo was produced by the nearby Älmhult-based furniture maker Specab.
The glass parts for the suites' light fixtures were designed by Bernadotte & Kylberg and produced by multi-award-winning glass artists Simon Klenell and Rasmus Nossbring at Stockholm Glas, while the stone used for some of the furniture comes from Kullaro Stone of Sweden.
The suites' unique wallpapers were created by acclaimed pattern designer Martin Bergström, based on Bernadotte & Kylberg's creative brief. Bergström also visited Eriksberg several times, not only for inspiration but also to collect plants and details that he then used to design the suites' wallpaper.
