In May 2021, we made our inaugural visit to the RANYA Hotel project site. The natural surroundings here left us deeply impressed — abundant flowing streams, rising mist, dense forests, and vibrant moss, creating a picturesque scene reminiscent of the water towns of Jiangnan, despite being situated in the northern region. A stream meanders at the foot of the mountains, giving rise to a stretch of structures that represent the area in need of improvement. This is where we envision constructing a resort, departing from the outdated concepts in the current era of evolving lifestyles.

For the emerging RANYA Hotel in this location, our aspiration is to preserve the mountainous and forested environment to the greatest extent possible, allowing the therapeutic essence carried by the flowing streams to permeate. We envision a space where weary travelers, having undergone the trials of their journey, can gently release themselves amidst the embrace of the land adorned with mountains, forests, streams, and mist. It is a place where one can find solace for the heart, much like ourselves who have been comforted by the nurturing touch of nature on our journey to the point.

Escaping the Urban Bustle · Embracing the Mountains
Adhering to the principle of “nature’s inherent beauty without human craftsmanship,” the design starts from the local topography, making the most of the native vegetation. In terms of spatial organization, rigid constructions are abandoned in favor of utilizing the natural terrain and plant life for delineation. A spacious lawn area is left open in the central courtyard, while the topography rises at the entrance, forming a valley-like enclosure with the buildings and the mountains. This design creates a sense of being cradled gently by the mountains and forests, allowing observers to experience the soothing embrace of the natural surroundings.
Garden Space Segmented Solely by terrain and plants © 河狸景观摄影
The entrance, formed by locally excavated mountain rocks, deliberately unveils a low and discreet mountain gate. Opting for black carbonized wood, in contrast to the white architecture, strives to blend seamlessly into the vegetation, aiming for a more natural environment. Get rid of the urban sensation of “arrive then check-in,” upon entering the mountain gate, one must traverse uneven stone pathways and cross through a pebble garden before reaching the hotel.

Old slate and gravel ground, materials with irregularities and uneasy to walk, encourage visitors to abandon their efficiency-driven habits, slow down their pace, and immerse their attention in the natural surroundings around them.

Journeying Through Time · Roaming from Nature to Courtyard
After exploring the hidden beauty, the central courtyard unfolds with a sudden openness, making people feel effortlessly natural. Upon pausing to observe, we aspire for the central courtyard to possess enduring and timeless aesthetic value. The design employs the techniques of dry landscape gardening, with earth, stones, grass, and trees mimicking mountain ranges, while gravel areas resemble seas, creating layered peaks and undulating waves. The stone-strewn sandbanks stand motionless, while the plants blossom and shed leaves responsive to the changing seasons through the whole year, which adds the space value of multiple visits and explorations to the garden. This dynamic of change and constancy sparks philosophic reflections and dialogues, unconsciously guiding observers into a flowing natural landscape within the timeline.

We have preserved some significant plants on-site, including arge willow trees (Salix babylonica), hawthorns (Crataegus pinnatifida), soapberries (Gleditsia sinensis), and Chinese catalpas (Catalpa ovata), making the site more historical. The grand willow tree in the central courtyard, with a diameter at breast height approaching 60 cm, suggests an age of at least 50 years based on growth speed calculations, witnessing the transformations around it. We’ve designated it as the heart of the courtyard still, standing tall to represent the passage of time and engage in a dialogue with the newly emerging nature. Based on the positioning of this grand willow tree, we’ve adjusted the spatial organization of the courtyard, orchestrating the spatial order of the lawn, artistic sandbank, and surroundings to revolve around the tree.

The landscape incorporates a significant number of stones, yet not a single one adheres to a regular form. Local rough stones, mountain rocks, antique building slabs, weathered blue stones, etc., —either selected from surplus materials around the site or repurposed from dismantled old residences, all find a place in the design. Stones of various textures, colors, origins across the country, are reassembled by Lan Ye, resulting in a unique and eclectic blend.

Through the distinct histories and individual textures of these stones, we express the marks left by the wind’s erosion and water’s gradual sculpting over the years in the natural environment, imparting the courtyard with more pronounced natural characteristics.

The design of dry landscape gardening is also applied at the hotel entrance. Deliberately employing spherical bulbs and elevating the light source, we create an illusion of flickering lights that exude a candle-like warmth, presenting a serene atmosphere that transcends time.

Concealed in the Ravine · Dialogues with Selfhood and the Present
The hot spring retreat is nestled against the mountain, with a loop formed by pedestrian suspension bridges on either side of the stream, allowing guests to choose their own path to the hot springs. The design focus here is on subtle intervention. The flowing stream brings a tranquil white noise, carrying the scents of the mountains and moist air. The bridges are uniformly designed as flat bridge, presented in earthy wooden tones to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
The hot spring retreat is built closely against the mountain, ensuring the privacy of the open-air hot spring pools © 河狸景观摄影
We have preserved the arranged stones at the entrance to the hot springs, allowing the architectural platform to recede and harmonize with its surroundings. The intertwining of plants and architecture, careful blending from various perspectives, obscures the mass of the structure. The hot spring retreat appears elusive amid the mountains and becomes even more enticing. The rugged rock wall at the base of the mountain requires only a minimal foreground of vegetation to complement its raw and rough texture, inviting contemplation and a sense of Zen.

The design endeavors to preserve the vegetation along the extended edge of the mountain, with the pathways paved using coffee-colored permeable bricks. Subtly blending into the soil tones, the pathways discreetly integrate within the environment. Seeking weathered “patina” old stones from bygone eras, we crafted small stone inscriptions and sculptures to bring out the local charm, presenting a natural and refined beauty shaped by the passage of time.

Within the stream, we sowed dense aquatic plants to soften the raised stream banks. A small boat anchored by the riverbank adds a poetic touch, evoking dynamic imaginations amid the reflections of mountains and water.

The riverside resting area faces the central lawn, where weathered slates in varying shades intermingle to depict the flowing stream. Seating, complemented by oil-paper umbrellas, aims to create a mottled handcrafted feel, allowing the resting space to seamlessly blend into the authentic natural surroundings.

Through the distinct experiences on both sides of the loop, guests can transition from the physical to the psychological, feeling anchored in the present, and understanding the essence of “concealed in mountains and waters, then returning to nature.” In doing so, they will discover the “sanctuary for the heart,” engaging in self-reconciliation and self-dialogue, and complete a profound healing experience for contemporary urban dwellers.

Ever-changing Seasons · An Unfolding Scroll Painting
Embracing the vastness of the horizon and capturing the splendor of all four seasons, we aspire to infuse the beauty of each season into the courtyard. In summer, the courtyard is adorned with the delicate hues of Lagerstroemia (Lagerstroemia indica) and Thousand Bird flowers (Gaura lindheimeri), akin to the rosy clouds of a maiden. The hydrangeas, so-called Endless Summer, bloom exuberantly, meanwhile the trees and spherical shrubs in the garden are draped in a lush and glossy green. Accompanied by the murmuring sounds of the flowing stream, once stepping into the courtyard one can immediately impart a rich sense of summer delight.

Autumn is the most colorful season in the courtyard’s scroll painting. Showcases of the golden Acer truncatum, the rich crimson of red maples (Acer palmatum), euonymus flameus (Euonymus alatus), Japanese maple (Acer palmatum), and the warm hues of the orange-leaved Cotinus coggygria, these varied shades of yellow, orange, and red create a palette of rich colors in the autumn composition. Hawthorns also bear fruit during this season, providing a different experience as one reaches out to pluck them.

Even in the cold winter, the courtyard retains its evergreen backdrop with the evergreen plants of Korean boxwoods (Buxus sinica), Scots pines (Pinus tabuliformis), and spruces (Picea asperata). Deciduous trees like maples and willows shed their leaves but maintain branches, developing an elegant and graceful form and adding a unique aesthetic value to the winter landscape.

RANYA has experienced three seasons until September 2023. Coming next spring, the courtyard will be graced with the blossoms of white flowers of apricot trees (Armeniaca sibirica), hawthorns (Crataegus pinnatifida), and fragrant martins (Syringa reticulata subsp. amurensis), and pink-white flowers of brook feather (Xanthoceras sorbifolium), while clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) bloom with pale purple flowers. These delicate and charming colors will bring the essence of spring to the garden. Moreover, the bright azaleas (Rhododendron simsii) will also extend the hues of spring from the forest to the Lan Ye courtyard in their specific season. Continuously, the healing essence of mountains, forests, streams, and mist will be bestowed upon all urban travelers.
