厘米制造受邀参加“漫游·南头延生”艺术装置展，并打造出以南头古城为原型的艺术装置。南头延生艺术装置展旨在提供一种漫游者的阅读视角审视南头古城渐进式更新改造的累足成步，感悟砖瓦背后的共同记忆。厘米制造致力于探索古城原生且具有典型性的古城形态并进行转译，以及如何对改造过程中产生的大量建筑废料进行“消化”。受到南头古城城门的启发，我们设计了一把以古城门拱形形态为原型的“南头古城椅”艺术装置，椅子具有功能性的同时体现雕塑美感，“强化”空间形态的转译与材料的再生。

CM Design was invited to participate in the Nantou Odyssey exhibition, creating an art installation originated by Nantou Old Town. The exhibition aims to outline a perspective for roamers，introducing them to examine the incremental steps of urban renewal, and recognize a collective identity beyond the tiles. CM work on exploring and translating the traditional and typical form of the old town, and “digesting” the large amount of construction waste generated during the renovation process. We made a chair in the shape of the arch of the old town, which has both functionality and sculpture beauty, strengthening the translation of morphology and the regeneration of materials.

设计来源于南头古城的三点特殊性：一是南头古城的外在标志性：城门，提取拱形门洞作为椅子的基本形态。二是南头古城的内在特性：共生（古建筑与新建筑相互依存共生，新空间形态与旧空间形态共生），椅子在材料上体现这种新旧并存共生，利用回收的建筑骨料与新材料制作椅子。三是南头古城的房屋结构特性：脆弱（城中村建筑都是村民自发的建造行为，房屋结构大多都需要加固，结构具有不稳定性），椅子内在结构希望是一种脆弱的不稳定性，随着展览时间的推移椅子会发生弯曲甚至破裂。

The design was inspired by particularity on three aspects of Nantou Old Town, one is known as the landmark from the exterior——the gate, which generated the basic form of the chair. The inherent character we called “grow in difference”——which refers to the coexistence between old and new buildings, traditional and modern architecture space——was also reflected in a mixture of recycling bricks and resin that applying to the seat. Due to the use of loose materials, the chair has an unstable structure, which may lead to bending or even breaking over time, embodying the fragility­——buildings and houses in the old town were constructed by natives without planning and approval, resulting in unstable structure and demand for structure reinforcement.

在试验过程中，我们尝试了各种浇筑工艺和技术，以探索树脂材料与红砖骨料融合的特性。例如，椅子浇筑的厚度控制在5厘米以内、红砖骨料的密度均匀分布，以充分利用这种材料极高的渗透性和热胀性，防止内部热胀导致的爆裂。

We’ve experimented several pouring techniques to explore the mixed use of resin glue and brick aggregate. As a conclusion, the thickness of the chair should be within 5 cm, and the brick aggregate has to be evenly scattered to prevent from cracks due to internal thermal expansion.

我们将“南头古城椅”艺术装置做了一次行为艺术，邀请南头古城内原住民、安保、保洁、建筑工人、新移民、设计师、商家、游客、外卖小哥等为古城做出贡献及相关联的人在椅子上留下各自的影像，把南头古城共生、共融、共享的一面通过行为艺术真实地展现出来。

We tried performance art after finishing the Chair. By inviting natives, security man, cleaner, builder, immigrants, designer, retailer, visitor, and delivery man——those who had contributed a lot to the old town——to take pictures on the chair, mutualism, integration and sharing of Nantou Old Town could be truly revealed.

南头古城椅是对南头古城与城中村共融生共发展状态的一次新的阐述，既是对新设计方法的一次探索，也是对家具产品板块的一次衍伸。我们利用更新改造过程中的建筑垃圾来设计这一系列碳排放量更低的物品，探索其作为再生材料的可能。系列作品首选城中村基础建材的红砖作为骨料，未来可探索使用废弃的瓷砖、水刷石、混凝土、木材等材料，形成具有概念识别性、材料多样性的系列艺术装置作品。

The Chair of Nantou Old Town is a new explication to the growing in difference and mutual development between the old town and urban village. It is not only an exploration of new design methods, but also extending to the design of furniture and art installation. Recycling construction waste from the process of renovation will be converted into a series of items with lower carbon emissions, exploring the possibility of using them as renewable materials. Red bricks as the basic building material in urban villages were supposed to be the first. Ceramic tiles, water-washed sandstones, concretes, woods and other materials would be subsumed into a systematic work of art installation with conceptual recognition and material variety.
