The area around the new Rotterdam Central Station is considered the international gateway to the city. In the spring of 2014, the station was opened by the Dutch king after 6 years of construction and is used since then daily from 110,000 travelers. The connection to the high-speed line HSL Zuid is expected in the coming years with a massive increase in passenger numbers.

It was created by team CS, an alliance of architects and engineers Benthem Crouwel, Meyer en Van Schooten and West 8. Last year, the team was able to collect some awards, including the Dutch Design Award and the Rotterdam Architecture Prize. This year, the station was awarded the "Best Building of 2015" award of the Dutch Association of Architects BNA.
