A small piece made in-between client work. An obscure cut of setting shots that does not set anything up: a build up to nothing, where the title never forms, the story never unfolds.
And a bit of the background on the project, for it seems like its just a bunch of unrelated architectural shots with extremely bad environmental conditions (which ironically IS the correct description of the project), but there was a train of thoughts behind it that led to a certain overarching concept.
“At the mountain of madness” as you may know is a novel(la) by H. P. Lovecraft. The story details expedition to Antarctica somewhere in 30s, when a group of explorers discover a lost city of an ancient alien civilization. The city itself confuses us with absolutely nonsensical architecture which is gigantic and lack any kind of reference for a human. I was always fascinated by the idea of a mystery that is the building of a world, and how much is enough to create the world and make it tangible. I am also quite fascinated by the concept of existential dread that comes out of the unknown, out of something that doesn’t have a clear semantic reference (or, perhaps, the reference itself is broken), and we see the image that we refer to as “architecture” or “typography” but what if it is not?
Ultimately the piece is an exercise in world building, deconstructing what makes urban space into almost dreamlike environment. As if somebody is trying to remember an actual place, but pieces of the memory never actually made sense.
