Joseph eichler, founder of eichler homes, was responsible for the construction of over 11,000 homes throughout california between 1950 and his death in 1974. one of the most prolific real estate developers in post-war america, he called upon architects of equal stature to complete home designs, at times employing the likes of: frank lloyd wright, robert anshen, claude oakland & associates, jones & emmons, a. quincy jones, and raphael soriano. one of many eichler residences, was chosen for renovation by klopf architecture–in collaboration with arterra landscape architects and flegel’s construction.
A part of the refurbishment, original walls were extended, allowing nearly the entire facade to be openable to the outside. the home flawlessly transitions between interior and exterior, equal parts residence and open air pavilion. further, the plan utilizes the japanese concept of borrowed landscape, and incorporates a fountain, concrete bench wall, and natural landscaping. the remodeled 1,712ft2 home functions as a single-family residence and is located in palo alto, california–the heart of silicon valley.
