As part of the Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development’s “Shared Vision for Lake City,” the old Fire Station 39 site was donated to the Low Income Housing Institute for the development of the Tony Lee Apartments. This project provides 70 units of workforce housing and a preschool at the ground level. The preschool is accented with four colored boxes to denote each of the four classrooms within, while a continuous yellow ribbon peels away at the building skin as an expression of play. The ground level design orients its activities relative to Lake City’s central core and festival streets to the southwest.
