Designed by the NYC based firm Susan T. Rodriguez Architecture and Design, the Carillon offers a new gathering place and micro classroom on the campus and is a symbol of the University’s Bicentennial. One of fewer than 30 grand carillons in the world, the new structure replaces a previous design from the 1970s and houses 65 bells, held aloft by the tower’s limestone piers, vertical fins, and horizontal steel hubs.

The carillon originally featured 61-bells, each inscribed with a quote or inscription about music from male authors. STR worked with the Royal Eijsbouts bell foundry in the Netherlands to create four new bells that extend the musical range of the instrument, each with a quote from a great woman.

The carillon serves as a focal point for IU’s campus and recasts the landscape as an outdoor concert hall with the Carillon as its centerpiece.
