Living in one of the 375 rental apartments, working in the lobby, cooking together in the cooking studio or exercising on the roof: it's all possible in the multifunctional residential building 'The Cohesion Cobana' (previously known as The FIZZ Cobana) on the Brede Hilledijk in Rotterdam. The complex was given a tough and robust appearance inspired by the industrial port buildings in and around Katendrecht. The apartments are specifically intended to bind Young Professionals to the city for a longer period and to respond to the increase in this target group on the housing market.
Cobana fits in seamlessly with typical Rotterdam port buildings such as Codrico, the Maassilo and grain silos. These industrial and functional buildings are designed with a refined sense of aesthetics. The robust materials (concrete, steel, masonry), the load-bearing structures in the facade (beams, columns, grids and consoles) and accents such as glass cubes for daylighting, high expressive eaves, awnings, transport bridges, escape balconies and stairs were used as inspiration during the design process.
