The former gravel mining site of Cornerstone Park was a dangerous eyesore – depressing residential and commercial values. Nature was reestablishing itself on the barren landscape, but no solution existed for balancing newly developing wildlife habitat with community recreation needs. Design Workshop translated this juxtaposition between landscapes shaped by man and those shaped by nature into a park design whose strong forms reflect the site’s past use and delineate future opportunities for human activity and natural function. The 40-acre lake and wetlands are the center of the plan – providing a large body of open water and also serving as a detention basin and natural filter for over 9,700 acres of surrounding land.
