Long Bridge Park has transformed the former industrial site squeezed between an interstate, a major rail corridor, and Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary into a community resource for both recreation and environmentally sensitive development. In doing so Arlington has created a new gateway that shows that public use and nature can be returned to even the most unlikely urban locations. Hargreaves Associates worked together with engineers and product manufacturers to design the subsurface of the synthetic fields as stormwater detention thereby protecting the adjacent Chesapeake Bay. The park includes three state-of-the-art playing fields with lighting for intensive year-round multi-use to nurture homegrown talent and bring world-class events to the area. Gardens create areas for seating and contemplation opposite the recently approved new Boeing development, and the rain garden slows and filters stormwater runoff playing its part in protecting Roaches Run, the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
