Matryoshka Lounge | Moscow Airport 

Thanks to the success and the international attention and appreciation for the special design of the Privium Club Lounge at Schiphol, our agency regularly receives requests from abroad. In 2015 we were approached with the request for an international design competition for a Lounge at Sheremetyevo International Airport. For this lounge, M+R has used Russia's best-known souvenir as a metaphor for the spaceconcept. 

Matryoshka's have been manufactured in Russia since about 1890. The furniture maker Wassili Petrovich Swjosdokkin and the painter Sergei Wassiljewich Maljutinde were the first to make matryoshka's in Russia, possibly on behalf of the industrialist Savva Mamontov. The idea is probably derived from traditional Japanese lucky dolls. They were meant as children's toys. At the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris, Mamontov's wife showed the dolls. They were awarded a bronze medal. This was the beginning of the popularity of the Matryoshka. 

The design of the lounge is divided into an entrance and catering section, with an extensive buffet with various seating areas and a lounge area with comfortable seats and work stations. Part of the lounge are toilets with shower facilities. Sheremetyevo Airport has won the 'business traveler award' in 2017 for the best Russian airport and the best Business Lounge. Meanwhile M+R has won two prestigious lounges in competition, a business and VIP lounge, these will be delivered in May 2018.
