In the Dutch children's book 'The Little Captain', the main character is stranded with his boat on a dune and he experiences fantastic journeys and wonderful adventures to discover the world and make it his own! When we extend this beautiful story to education, our children are the little Captain and the school building is the model for the wonderful ship where all adventures are experienced! We are convinced that the design will contribute to this journey of discovery of children! That she challenges to explore, feels safe to brave the adventures, moves children to play and collaborate!
The Little Captain is being developed and built on Cruquiuseiland in Amsterdam. The Kleine Kapitein houses a Dalton school, a daycare center and a gym/gym. The gym is designed in accordance with the guidelines of the NOC*NSF. The building has been designed in a very sustainable way, entirely in accordance with the guidelines of 'Fresh schools class B', in which special attention has been paid to optimal ventilation. It is a Nearly Energy Neutral Building. The school is designed in a nature-inclusive way with nesting boxes for birds and bats and insect hotels in the facades.
