Designed as a humble seaside retreat in a rural village in the forest, Gajah Air (in Bahasa for water elephant) is an alteration of a dilapidated hut with a magnificent view of a nearby island looking like a submerged elephant in the sea. It is conceptualized as a paradise away from the urban metropolis on Hong Kong island where time stands still.
The use of local materials and traditional graphic motifs make for a modern contextual reference to times gone by in the rural village in Hong Kong. The interiors were conceptualized with subdued classic palette of black and white colours, reminiscent of colonial bungalows in the southeast Asia. This in turn makes for a quiet backdrop wherein the Indonesian Chinese owner’s collection of eclectic furniture and colours pop in complementary contrast.
We exposed the old chiseled brick wall textures wherever possible, crafted rusted steel plates as shelves and sourced for traditional mosaics to further accentuate the deliberately eccentric pieces.
