青云谷是云台山地区的一个山谷，本访客中心位于山谷景区入口处，包含接待问询、商店、餐饮、休憩等功能。

近些年来，中国游客中心最常见的模式，就是坐落在巨大广场尽头的巨大建筑。这样的游客中心，无端拉长步行距离，游走体验乏味、冗长，令人身心疲惫、游兴大减，也会对自然环境产生冲击。

项目场地位于山谷中的小片水面附近。在中国传统文化的意境中，最理想的游憩体验就是穿过曲折的林间小径后，走到水边豁然开朗，在亭台上凭虚凌空，感受天地万物。

我们摒弃大单体的设计思路，在

水岸上设置栈桥作为场地，替代原定的

需要平整的山坡场地

；然后

参考当地传统村落的形态，按照功能将游客中心拆分成坡屋顶小单体组成的聚落；最后根据功能的开放程度，将每个体量“下沉”或“浮起”。设计以极克制和轻质的方式介入环境，同时复活了传统文化中的理想山水意境。

This project locates at the entrance of Qingyun Valley tourist area. The commission demanded an environmental friendly and iconic building containing reception space, gift shop, restaurant, restrooms, and an outdoor theater. Domain Architects were invited after an earlier proposal was rejected.

In recent years, the most common model of tourist centers in China is a large building on a large, empty square, which also exactly fits the earlier proposal. This model generates long and boring walking experience, and makes a huge impact on the natural environment.

Instead of the “large building + large square” model, we moved the site to the pond and broke the programs into a cluster of small volumes “floating” on a large horizontal slab elevated from the water by slanted stainless-steel columns. Then, the volumes “float” upward or “sink” down according to the degrees of openness of their programs.

The result is not only an abstract articulation of the context of local hilly villages, but also a great illustration of the artistic mood in traditional Chinese literati culture.

About Domain Architects

Established in Shanghai, Domain Architects is a studio led by Mr. Xiaomeng Xu. Our practice strives to reform the spatial experience with innovative site strategy. We believe every site has its potential to generate unique spatial experience. By rejecting conventional models, we keep going back to the original nature of sites and programs to reinvent the logic and quality of spaces. Mr. Xiaomeng Xu, the founder of the studio, graduated from University of Pennsylvania with B.A. in architecture and then obtained Master of Architecture from Columbia University.
