"Folding library is the new study heart of Eindhoven. The contrast between the old and the new is embraced by the cantilivering, folding floors over de old brick facade. The new building folds like a book over the existing garages. "
The concept is based on connection. By lifting the new volume it provides multiple routes at ground level and connections to surrounding buildings through the roof gardens. The old building is connected with new building throughout a glass surroundig wich follows the outlines of the void. This creates a transparant connection where people litterly can walk from one building to another.
The contrast between old and new is clearly visible. The existing factory has the old brick facade with black accents while the new building is executed in minimalist white stucco with futuristic light lines. The new building contains of four floors with an roof garden. On the ground floor, the existing structure of the garage is still clearly visible. The black steel forms a starting point for the entire interior of the garage. It contains a lounge and coffee bar with the glass roof. This gives a view of the new building.
With the big staircase you enter the the first floor. This immediately gives a minimalist atmosphere. It offers an open structure with several workplaces. The concept with the quiet and private zones is clearly visible. The higher you get, the more individual and closed spaces.
The rotating voids correspond with the rotating floors wich creates a lot of space and connects all floors together. The collored translucent glass on top of the balustrade indicates the zone of quietness.
